So we were all left a little befuddled at the Jacob episode. In the wake of my awe-induced stare, I went to the Promised Lan. At this event, I spoke to fellow disciples of Damon Lindelof. When approaching the Jacob episode, they sought to understand the deep biblical connection to the name Jacob, something that had not yet crossed my mind. But it makes so much sense.
In the Bible, as Jacob came to the end of his days, his eyes began to wane. When Joseph brought in his two sons to receive they're blessing, Jacob crossed his arm to bless the children in reverse order. As Joseph questioned this on account of his blindness, Jacob replied that he knew what he was doing.
In the same way, it seems that Ben expected to receive the blessing of Jacob to continue his Steward-of-Gondor-like leadership role of the Others. However, it is obvious that he did not. I think the fact that Locke heard anything is an indication of Jacob's blessing over him. It is obvious from Locke's varied past, that he is destined to be "special," and this is a manifestation of this.

Very interesting. I love how they weave Biblical references into the show.
Great thought. It's better than anything I've come up with. All I know is that Jacob freaked the crap out me.
