I was reading about last night's episode on Lostpedia.com and picked up some very interesting little tidbits about it.
*This is for you, Leona - When Achara's brother hands her the envelope, they are using a traditional Thai greeting - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_greeting.
*Jack's tattoo does not literally translate to "He walks among us, but he is not one of us" as Isabel explains. It is taken from a poem by Chairman Mao Zedong, and translates correctly in Chinese to "Eagles high, cleaving sky." <--Is this what Jack meant when he told Isabel, "That's not really what it means"? Or is he referring to something else altogether?
*The title of the episode, "Stranger in a Strange Land" may refer to:
1) Exodus 2:22. The verse is "And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land", 2) The name of a book written by Robert Heinlein: Stranger in a Strange Land, or 3) Any of three Stranger in a Strange Land songs by that title: one by Iron Maiden, one by U2, and one by Leon Russell.<--You Bible college students - get to looking up Gershom; see if he relates somehow =).
*Juliet's mark could be a reference to the Mark of Cain, from the story of Cain and Abel - Genesis 4:15 - "And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him." <--I find this very interesting. They acted like the mark was a punishment, but was it really for Juliet's protection so that no one in the future could punish her for the killing of Danny?

On Gershom:
Gershom actually comes from the Hebrew root Gershomah meaning "expulsion" (or possibly "violence"). In Exodus 2:22, Moses names his child Gershom because Moses considers himself a "stranger in a strange land." Later in the story (Exodus 4:24-26) God seeks to kill Moses because his son (this is frequently interpreted to be Gershom) has not been circumcised. Moses' wife Zipporah quickly circumcized the son and Moses is saved.
This might parallel to Lost in that Jack in the "stranger in a strange land" (Moses) and his current woman is Juliet (now playing the part of Zipporah). The odd part is that in the Biblical narrative, Zipporah saves Moses. Here we see Jack saving Juliet.
On the mark:
That's an interesting thought. I have my doubts, but perhaps there's something there.
On everything else:
Cool.
Well first of all, to note, at the bottom of the Wikipedia article on the Thai Greeting is a link to an article on "Namaste". This of course is the greeting done by Marvin Candle (the Orientation film guy) and Alvar Hanso himself in the Lost Exposed videos. It is interesting that this has ties back to Jack's past, just like the marking.
Secondly, I did my scholarly duty and looked up Gershom.
"Gershom, meaning stranger, or cast out (in a reference to Moses having fled Egypt) and Eliezer, meaning God is my help, were the two sons of Moses and Zipporah who were born in Midian while Moses lived there for 40 years with Jethro, prior to his return to Egypt for the Exodus at age 80 (Exodus 7:7). Although their father is one of the most famous people of Bible History, relatively little is recorded about Gershom and Eliezer (who were half Levite through their father and half Midianite through their mother), and unlike their cousins who succeeded Moses' brother Aaron in his role as high priest, Gershom and Eliezer did not take over their father's position as Israel's leader - Joshua, of the tribe of Ephraim, did (see Children of Jacob)."
Also interesting to note, in Exodus 4:21-26, Moses neglected his duty as an Israelite (to circumcise his son) and " that the LORD met him, and sought to kill him." Zipporah circumcised the child and told Moses "thou art a bloody husband to me." Most scholars view this event as a precursor to the plague of the firstborn because Moses' life was saved by the blood of his firstborn.
It's obvious that Jack was a stranger in a strange land, but given Jack's deep connection to his father (his guiding influence in life) this is very interesting information.
Then again, maybe JJ Abrams just likes Iron Maiden.
Well, right now we see Jack saving Juliet. Who knows if that will change in the future. Remember, Moses saved Zipporah from the shepherds before she saved him. (Exodus 2:17)
Interesting point. Moses did save her first. Hmm.....
on the mark I kinda agree that this could be ben's way of saving her in the future but we will see and thanks for the greeting info by the way
